Character Interview #4: Amaury (From My Only Name is Honor)

Published on 15 February 2025 at 21:49

Hey-o, Word-wielders,

We have chatted with main character Honor and side characters Tobias and Brig. The time draws nigh now to have our fourth character interview, the antagonist, Amaury.

This is a character type that I have never tried to write before. An antagonist so involved in real-time story action, an antagonist of such complexity. My goal is to make him both likable and not, someone who's intentions you can't quite decipher, who will surprise you. We'll see whether or not I'll succeed at this.

Quick note before I begin, Amaury has also been the single most difficult character I've ever named, which I'll talk about more in my next part of my outlining series. However, some of you may be scratching your heads trying to figure out how to pronounce his name. It's a-MOW-ree, with the "ow" sound like that in "cow". (Flattering, I know, but it's the best word thought of.)

Anyway, you were expecting an interview, not a ramble. Let's begin.

Me: Prince Amaury. *curtsies*

Amaury: What do you want?

Me: That's what I'm asking you. Want do you really want?

Amaury: And why should you care?

Me: Are we just going to ask each other questions or what?

Amaury: I want you to leave my ship.

Me: That's a start. She has a lovely name, your ship. After your mum, Aveline.

Amaury: I'm aware.

Me: You must miss her.

Amaury: Of course I miss her! I'm not a cold-hearted imbecile.

Me: What do you miss? What did you love about her? Apparently she was the jewel of Siana.

Amaury: She was fearless. Not just of danger, but she could hold her own in the courts of royalty as well as she could mingle with street vendors. I once saw her give the gloves off her hands to a beggar woman just so she could buy some bread. When we had problems with other countries, she was the one my father consulted on how to return to peace. And she had a real answer, not just excuses we could hide behind so we didn't have to go to war.

Me: But you're at war now. Siana against Harranesh.

Amaury: *grits teeth* You think that was my idea?

Me: Are you against war?

Amaury: *snorts* Of course not. I'm thinking of a different war. A war that was never fought.

Me: You're angry over a war that never happened? All those lives that weren't slaughtered?

Amaury: There was one life I lost in that battle never happening, and it was the one that mattered most.

That's Amaury's interview. As for a quick update on my progress in My Only Name is Honor, I'm close to 3/4 done the first draft. This book has been progressing faster than any of my other novels.

May you live for Christ and give Him praise!

Nice! I love complicated antagonists, and it looks like you're doing a really good job with Prince Amaury. I, for one, am definitely intrigued.
