Hey-o, Word-wielders,
So, prompt time again. (If you want more, check out my post Prompt Time: 10 Story Starters) Today, instead of offering you lines to start a story with, I'm going to give you a picture for inspiration, and then write my own story based off it. Ready? Let's dive in.
So, after a quick search for pictures, this is the one I decided on.
Right away, it piques interest. Why is a woman wearing a dress in a cave/sinkhole thingy? How did she get there? How can she get out? Did she try to get where she is? Let your brain run around with ideas. Could you change it up? Maybe it's a child you write about. Perhaps they're stuck in a well instead.
Here's my story based off this image.
Light.
It filtered in slowly at first, a tease against the thick darkness she'd been walking through this past hour, pierced by the harsh beam of a flashlight. This light was gentle, warm, somehow more alive.
She grinned, clicking the beam off and stowing it among the jumble of her backpack. The tourists always got excited at this part, and she could see why. The light felt like a present.
She began to run, something the tourists were never allowed to do, but she knew these caves like the contours of her baby's face. She wouldn't fall.
The light began to envelope her, stroking her cheeks and reflecting the dust kicked up by her flapping sandals. The tunnel widened, and she found herself in the Room of Sunlight, a sapphire hiding in the dust and darkness of the caves.
"Lovely," she whispered, not wanting to break the beauty of the quiet warmth here. It was always a majestic room, the hole in the rock above a skylight to the world, but, without the tourists, it felt secret, special.
"I've waited my whole life to explore you alone," she said, running her fingers along the gritty walls. All the years of her parents telling her to wait, wait, all the months after her and Alejandro's wedding, all the weeks counting down the arrival of their baby girl, Paloma, and finally, she had accomplished a dream.
"And one day, my darling girl will come here herself, and experience the magic of light."
Were you inspired? Let me know what you came up with down in the comments.
May you live for Christ and give him praise.
