Brainstorm On: Part 2 - Poetry

Published on 21 September 2024 at 11:25

Hey-o, Word-wielders,

An important part of writing is actually coming up with the idea of what you want to write, aka "Brainstorming", and today I'll be taking you through some methods on how to brainstorm for poetry.

  1. Write on a topic you love

Are you a nature lover? Someone who feels strongly on talking about poverty? Why don't you turn it into a poem? I enjoy writing poems about music and nature.

2. Write a list of words you love

What words get you excited? Do you love the sound of words like illuminate, swirling, tangled, or stark? Write a list of words you love and see what inspiration strikes.

3. Listen to inspirational music

I have a few poems inspired by a certain songs. What mood does this song have? What topic does it cover? What imagery comes with it?

4. Create a mood board

Poetry especially can be full of symbolism, moods, colours, and the like. Create a board full of inspiring quotes, photos, clip art, or even maybe just patterns, and it might wake up your brain in a delightful new way.

5. Take a day to study

Not school! (Though you can.) I'm talking about taking a day to carefully observe things around you. Find a moth and study the texture of its wings, the way it moves. Look at the dust swirling in the sunlight. What mood does it emit? Look around at the beautiful world we live in, and give God glory while you're at it.

There's 5 ideas for inspiring your next poem. And guess what? I'll be posting a poem of my own down below. The Swirling Canvas We Titled Sky.

Thank You, God,
For the blush of dawn as she lights up the day.
A rosy maid, eyes glittering blue.
Thank You for Your kaleidoscope canvas, colours slow-motion swirling in the dance of sunrise to sunset.
Tangerine upon rose, violet twirling with gold,
Azure crowning the heavens.
The manifestation of Your imagination,
The power of colour at Your fingertips
Stretches above our wandering eyes every
Single
Day.
And yet how often do we take the time to credit the artist?

Thank the Master;
Praise the Lord.

What do you do to find poetry ideas? Let me know down below in the comments.

May you live for Christ and give Him praise!
